On Labor Day, we drove down to South Carolina and stopped at the Columbia Zoo, where Sarah Jane was FINALLY able to see a live elephant—something she’s been wanting to do for months. We spent that night and the next few days on Hilton Head Island off South Carolina. We met my cousin Marcie Curtis, her husband Brackon and their 4 beautiful daughters, Kennedy, Morgan, Emree, and Berkeley. They are living in Atlanta right now and graciously invited us to share their vacation. A huge thanks to Brackon for traveling and collecting all those Marriott points—we loved the Grande Ocean resort!
It really was a dream vacation—the girls paired off so well with their cousins and we had 3 full days of no fighting! We enjoyed the multiple hotel pools and hot tubs and spent every morning and afternoon at the beach. We explored some tidal pools on one of our early morning walks and found a live starfish (which we returned to the ocean) as well as crabs, fish and shells. The girls had collected several shells and were surprised later at the hotel to find that most of the shells were already inhabited by tiny hermit crabs!
We saw lots of tropical plants, interesting birds, and even more interesting swim attire at the beach!
On our way home on Thursday, we stopped by Savannah, Georgia, where we rode the ferry and walked along River Street. The highlight was watching the making of (and sampling) fresh salt water taffy.
Nobody got sunburned, nobody got lost, nobody saw any sharks or alligators, and everybody had a wonderful time!!
